PhD-Workshop in Berlin
The third PhD-Workshop of the SPP 100+ was held in Berlin from April 22 to April 24, 2024. A total of 24 doctoral students from all 20 projects participated in the workshop.
On the first day, the participants were welcomed to BAM by Dr. Ralf Herrmann. Prof. Dr.-Ing. Christian Sodeikat (TUM, Ingenieurbüro Schiessl Gehlen Sodeikat GmbH) then inaugurated the event with a presentation on the practical application of monitoring in the construction industry. Following the lunch break, Dr. rer. nat. Ernst Niederleithinger (BAM) gave an introduction to non-destructive testing methods, which was followed by a hands-on session in which the participants were able to try out the detection of cladding pipes and reinforcement in concrete components using ultrasound and radar. The first day ended with a guided tour of the BAM laboratories and a joint barbecue.
The second day began with a lecture by Mr. Lambracht (City Mönchengladbach) on the subject of bridge inspections. This was followed by a coaching seminar on scientific writing, led by Prof. Dr. rer. nat. habil. Bernhard Schartel (BAM), as well as a thematic dialogue with Mr. Lüker from the Federal Ministry for Digital and Transport Affairs (BMDV). The day concluded with a guided tour under the Berlin wall, which offered enlightening insights into the underground escape attempts during the division of Germany.
Following two successful days at BAM, the doctoral students were welcomed by Prof. Dr.-Ing. Petryna at TU Berlin on the third and final day of the workshop (24.04.2024). Ms. Christina Fritsch (MKP GmbH) delivered a lecture on structural diagnostics and its relevance for the evaluation of existing bridge structures. This was followed by a discussion on research data management in the SPP 100+. The workshop concluded with a guided tour of the Peter-Behrens-Halle, a historic AEG factory hall that is now used as an experimental hall by the Faculty of Civil Engineering.
We would like to thank all the speakers for their engaging presentations. We would also like to express our gratitude to BAM and TU Berlin for their hospitality and invaluable assistance in organizing the wonderful workshop.
