INVITATION TO THE KICK-OFF of "FOSsure"
On February 1, 2025, the Institute of Concrete Structures at TUD Dresden University of Technology will launch the new joint research project "FOSsure - Fiber Optic Sensors for Safe Condition Assessment of Concrete Bridges".
Problem definition
Structural monitoring is usually carried out using point sensors (e.g. strain gages). The use of distributed fiber optic sensors (DFOS) represents a paradigm shift, as structures can be monitored holistically and with high spatial resolution using just a few sensors. This holds great potential for the extended use of engineering structures. However, insufficient experience and a lack of data handling concepts stand in the way of widespread application. There is a lack of scientifically sound measurement concepts for new and existing structures.
Project objective
In the "FOSsure" project, procedures for the automated evaluation and assessment of large amounts of DFOS data are being developed and integrated into existing maintenance management. Procedures, which are also based on machine learning, enable the detection of structural anomalies and damage to the structure. Condition indicators are determined using complementary data (e.g. weather, traffic, building data) and implemented in evaluation routines.
Implementation
To create a real database, tests are carried out in the laboratory, on the "openLAB" research bridge near Bautzen and long-term measurements on four public road bridges using various measurement systems. Comparative measurements between the systems and measurement principles (e.g. with regard to the transferability of sensor metadata) are used to analyze their interoperability. With the DFOS, both actions and structural reactions are recorded and integrated into a measurement-based verification process and condition assessment.
