Module description
Qualification goals
Students can analyze and assess water bodies (all water bodies of surface and groundwater) with special consideration of nature conservation aspects and plan measures. They can assign and evaluate the interactions of surface and groundwater flows in the context of ecological effects.

- Water Framework Directive (WFD),
- Hydraulics and morphology of near-natural watercourses,
- Typification and development of watercourses,
- Biological engineering materials and construction methods,
- Use of woody plants and old watercourses,
- Ecological aspects of hydraulic engineering in the use of hydropower and the damming of watercourses,
- continuity of watercourses, hydraulics of fish ladders,
- Opening up and renaturation of canalized watercourses,
- Hydraulic engineering aspects in post-mining landscapes and open-cast mining pits,
- Monitoring of watercourses,
- Legal basis of planning approval and
- Practical examples of the design and development of watercourses.

Prerequisites for participation
In the Civil Engineering diploma program, the competencies to be acquired in the modules Fundamentals of Hydraulic Engineering and Hydrology or Fundamentals of Hydraulic Engineering and Technical Infrastructure and Dam and Hydropower Plants are required.
In the Civil Engineering postgraduate degree program, basic and advanced skills in hydraulic engineering and dam and hydropower plant construction, such as those acquired in the above-mentioned modules, are required.
Applicability
Civil Engineering
The module is a compulsory elective module in the Civil Engineering degree program.
The module is a compulsory elective module in the Diplom postgraduate course in Civil Engineering.
Requirements for the awarding of credit points:
Civil Engineering
Credit points are awarded if the module examination is passed. The module examination consists of a paper and colloquium lasting 90 hours.
Credit points and grades
8 credit points can be earned through the module.
The module grade corresponds to the grade of the examination.
Frequency of the module
The module is offered every academic year, starting in the winter semester.
Workload
The total workload is 240 hours.
Duration of the module
The module lasts two semesters.
