60 minutes: "Are algorithms better managers?"
moderated by:
Prof. Dr. Martin Wiener (Professorship for business informatics, especially business engineering).
The use of algorithms for the management of workers enables new business models (e.g. Airbnb, InstaCart, TaskRabbit and Uber) and is already an established practice in the platform economy. In the meantime, corresponding management practices are increasingly being used by traditional companies. While existing research points in particular to the “dark side” of so-called algorithmic management (e.g. insufficient transparency, continuous monitoring and dehumanization of work), current studies show that algorithmic management also enables new forms of interaction, that of workers Valued (such as the opportunity to receive continuous feedback). Against this background, the panel discussion addresses the overarching question of whether algorithms are possibly the “better managers”, with the panel participants bringing different perspectives into the discussion.
