Triphine Ainembabazi awarded the International Climate Protection Fellowship of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation

Triphine Ainembabazi from Uganda began her one-year research stay at the Chair of Meteorology at TU Dresden on April 1. Her stay is funded by the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation's International Climate Protection Fellowship, which is only bestowed upon twenty individuals per year.  

Together with the Chair of Meteorology, Triphine Ainembabazi is conducting research in the field of climate change adaptation on the topic of "Survival at Thresholds: Assessing Resilience Pathways of Smallholder Farmers to Climate Extremes in Eastern Uganda” (German: “Überleben am Grenzbereich: Bewertung der Widerstandsfähigkeit von Kleinbauern gegenüber Klimaextremen im Osten Ugandas”). The aim of her research project is to analyze climate extremes between 1980 and 2022 in eastern Uganda, predict their future occurrence and their frequency, and evaluate approaches towards sustainable and resilient agriculture in the face such climate extremes. 

"The effects of climate change are increasingly being felt in Uganda, affecting the lives of the country's citizens and its environment. Increasing climate extremes in conjunction with drought and heavy precipitation are endangering local agriculture. I am therefore delighted that this coveted Fellowship of the Humboldt Foundation will enable us to research possible solutions to these serious challenges in close cooperation with Triphine Ainembabazi," explains Prof. Matthias Mauder, Chair of Meteorology and mentor of the fellowship holder.    

"I am very excited to start this research collaboration under the Alexander von Humboldt-ICP-Fellowship with Professor Mauder who is a specialist in the field of meteorology", says Triphine Ainembabazi: "I strongly believe that this collaboration will yield significant results and I am looking forward to the impact these results can have contribute in developing countries like Uganda facing climate extremes. " 

About the International Climate Protection Fellowship of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation 
The International Climate Protection Fellowship is aimed at early-career supervisors from non-European transition or developing countries who are committed to climate and resource protection in science, business and administration in their countries. The scholarship is intended to enable the recipients to carry out a research project of their choice with a host institution in Germany whom they can choose themselves. The Alexander von Humboldt Foundation awards up to 20 International Climate Protection Fellowships every year. The scholarships are funded by the International Climate Initiative. The Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action has been in charge of this since 2022. 

The TU Dresden, with its Center for International Postgraduate Studies of Environmental Management (CIPSEM), is one of the official partners of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation in this program and organizes the Germany-wide Study Tour every year, which is an integral part of the stay of all scholarship holders.
