History
International aspects of forestry education in Tharandt
Soon after its opening, the Tharandt Forestry Academy gained an excellent reputation not only in Germany, but throughout Europe. Between 1816 and 1914, about 35% of the students came from abroad, mostly from Eastern European countries. With the beginning of the 20th century, selected subjects of tropical forestry were offered in Tharandt. It was scientists like BERNHARD, FRANKE, HUGERSHOFF and JENTZSCH who contributed significantly to the establishment and development of forestry science of the tropics and subtropics in Germany. The establishment of the Institute for Foreign and Colonial Forestry in 1931 ushered in another phase of tropical forestry research and teaching. The institute moved to Reinbek near Hamburg around 1940.
In 1946 the Faculty of Forestry Tharandt resumed teaching and in 1961 the first students from a tropical country (nine Vietnamese) matriculated. The Institute of Tropical and Subtropical Forestry and Timber Management, which was formed in 1963, became the institution for the study of "Tropical Forestry".
From 1974 to 1978, two matriculations of the postgraduate course "Tropical Forestry" were conducted. The students of the last year in the full course of study "Tropical Forestry" were enrolled in 1992. The financial support of the students by the DAAD was an important condition to continue the tropical forestry studies after the reunification of Germany. In 1995, a new chapter in the long tradition of tropical forestry education in Tharandt was started with the establishment of the 2-year Master's program.
