• Lecturer, Senior Researcher  (Ecophysiology, Limnology/Biogeochemistry) from 1982-1992, Humboldt-University Berlin
• Full Professor for General Ecology at  Technische Universität Dresden since 1993
• Director of Institute of General Ecology and Environmental Protection since 1994 alternating with P.A. Schmidt

Current research activities and recently completed projects

• Capacity of natural and close to nature constructed wetlands to eliminate radionuclides, heavy metals and arsenic (Ph.D. Project Mrs. K. Aretz financial support by state of Saxony(until 2008) and  Mr. Wang Weiqing, 2012-2016, NRF P.R. of China)
• Radionuclide and arsenic immobilisation related to carbon sequestration and burial in sediments of wetlands and streams (Ph.D. project M. Nassour 2008-2013, various financial supporters, among others Syrian government )
• Nutrient  and trace contaminant (C/Si/Ca/N/P, U, Ra, Pb, As) uptake, recycling, immobilisation and ecological stoichiometrics  in the course of litter decay (PhD and Habilitation project Jörg Schaller, 2008-2014,  since 2014 University of Bayreuth)
• Land use change and extreme climate events as driving forces of arsenic, heavy metal and DOC load and internal  release in water reservoirs  - An analysis, experimental prove and prognosis (LTV financed project in 2008-2011; 2012-2014)
• Fate and accumulation Imidaclopride (neo-nicotinoide insecticide) and bt-protein (genetically modified corn) in the litter decay and processing system of streams and effects on invertebrate ecosystem engineers (non target organisms)  (UBA financed project 2009/2010), Ph.D. project Mrs. R. Rossiter, M.F. Noomen): “Monitoring of soil heavy metal and arsenic contamination and phytoremediation sites using remote sensing technique” (2011-2013)
