Project aim
The aim of the first phase of the project is to analyze the current approaches for financing, funding and remuneration systems for ecosystem services in forestry (ES). The main objective is to evaluate them primarily with regard to their functionality in private forests. In this context, particular consideration should be given to how the present approaches can be used to finance the silvicultural tending phase of the growing stock in younger age classes. This forest development phase is crucial for successful forest adaption in the conext of climate change.
Based on the results, a remuneration system in the form of a "Waldleistungsprämie" will be developed for the model region. In order to represent the development of forests in the region in a way that is both detailed and clear, an adapted system of treatment types will be used, which fits into the WET concept of NRW (Waldentwicklungstypen Katalog NRW). In order to adequately take into account the diverse ownership structures in private forests, the forest areas of two pre-selected forestry associations in the model regions of Bergisches Land and Süd-Sauerland will serve as case studies.
To achieve the aim of the project, the following sub-goals will be addressed with corresponding work packages.
