The professorship introduces itself
The Chair of Silviculture is one of the central professorships in the field of forest science with a clear focus on application. Using the opportunities offered by our training forest and the experimental and teaching facility in Hetzdorf, this feature is equally important for teaching and research. The chair is closely networked with other professorships in the subject area and also has links to other degree courses at the university. In this respect, the Chair of Silviculture has an important, connecting and interdisciplinary function within the department as well as for the external impact of the subject area.
History of the Chair
The origins of the Tharandt Chair of Silviculture go back to the founder of the Tharandt Forestry College, Heinrich COTTA (1763-1844). With his work "Anweisung zum Waldbau" (Instructions on Silviculture), which was published in 1817 and went through 6 editions, COTTA created the basis for an independent specialist discipline. The necessary body of teaching and theory was continuously expanded by his successors, whereby silviculture was initially strongly influenced by Saxon stand management after 1860. With the acquisition of ecological knowledge and the discovery of important correlations, the 20th century saw a stronger focus on site-specific and more natural silviculture, which led via the principles of stock management (HEGER, BLANCKMEISTER) to modern, ecological silviculture (THOMASIUS).
