Mixed tree species in young stands: Mixing proportions and silvicultural development options
The study is part of the BMBF project "Future-oriented Forest management". One major objective is to assess the potential of naturally occurring hardwood individuals in young stands of spruce and pine. Moreover, the reaction of the admixed hardwoods to a release from interspecific competition in the otherwise pure stands of spruce and pine will be analyzed. Recommendations will be made concerning the permanent inclusion of naturally occurring hardwoods into the stand development of pure coniferous stands without causing economical losses or risks. We will especially focus on chances and risks resulting from the sudden release of individual trees. Possible risks include wood devaluation due to the formation of water sprouts or the loss of the individual tree following the removal of the supporting stand structure, while increases in crown, diameter, height and root growth are potential chances.
