Award-winning research contributions at EuroCarto 2024
From September 9–11, 2024, EuroCarto took place in Vienna for the fourth time after 2015, 2020 and 2022. The EuroCarto conference is one of ICA's regional conferences. Our Institute was also represented alongside researchers from more than 50 countries.
On the first day of the conference a series of workshops took place. The following three days offered a dense program of presentations in parallel sessions on a wide variety of topics, including presentations from our Institute:
- Benefits and challenges in cross media map production by Mathias Gröbe and Dirk Burghardt, on creating maps for print and web as part of a project for the Deutscher Alpenverein.
- Towards Mapping Place Semantics: A Geosocial Media Data Approach for Geo-Semantic Analysis and Place Similarity Computation by Madalina Gugulica and Dirk Burghardt, about the semantic similarity of places based on geosocial media data.
- A breakdown of subjective reactions in geo-social media and a review of their cartographic visualisation by Eva Hauthal and Dirk Burghardt on the types of subjective reactions in spatial social media data and how these can be visualized.
- Automated polygon schematization for thematic maps: an integrative review by Jakob Listabarth and Dirk Burghardt on a systematic classification of different polygon schematization approaches for thematic maps.
Insights into the current state of ongoing research in the field and the exchange with colleagues made EuroCarto a success. Besides that, another success factor was the audience award for the most inspiring presentation, awarded on the last conference day: all conference participants had the chance to cast a vote for the most inspiring presentation – and we were delighted to be awarded 2nd place for the presentation on schematic maps by Jakob Listabarth and Dirk Burghardt.
