Nico Rüpke Prize 2024 awarded

The Nico Rüpke Prize 2024 was awarded as part of the 75th anniversary event of the German Cartographic Society (DGfK) on 15 May 2025 at the Berlin State Library. The award for the best scientific paper of the year 2024 in the KN - Journal of Cartography and Geographic Information went to Alexander Dunkel, Dirk Burghardt and Madalina Gugulica for their contribution "Generative Text-to-Image Diffusion for Automated Map Production Based on Geosocial Media Data"(https://doi.org/10.1007/s42489-024-00159-9). The paper presents an open workflow for the automated production of pictogram maps using generative AI. Based on geosocial media data from platforms such as Twitter, Flickr, Instagram and iNaturalist, textual descriptions of activities and selected locations are derived, which are then converted into intuitively understandable pictograms as instructions (prompts) via stable diffusion.
