Research interests
Matthias is an environmental scientist and holds the professorship for environmental remote sensing at TU Dresden. His main research interest is the development and application of optical and microwave satellite observations and related methods to observe, quantify and model changes in land ecosystems and vegetation, understand their underlying processes, and the related feedbacks in the global carbon cycle and the Earth system. His interest is in environmental processes such as vegetation phenology, productivity, carbon cycling, vegetation water dynamics, drought effects, and specifically wildfires. Matthias is the principle investigator or a leading co-investigator in several research projects. Several publications in the multi-disciplinary journals Science and Nature and in various disciplinary journals demonstrate the broad scope and depth of his research.
