Research Field 4
Interactions between biological colonisation and function of rivers and streams
We work on applied freshwater ecology to generate an understanding of ecosystem processes. This also includes invasion biology. We conduct supporting analyses and evaluation of water body development measures as well as derivation of adapted management options and water quality analyses.
Methods
- Development of (bio-)monitoring concepts
- Acquisition and analysis of available data / long-term data
- Water chemistry (nutrient analysis: P, N)
- Chlorophyll-a analysis
- POC measurement
- Taxonomic and functional diversity for the assessment of ecosystem functions in the water body
- Modeling of habitat suitability
- Comparing statistical evaluation of monitorings (i.e. BACI design: „Before-after-control-impact“)
- Mapping of hydromorphological structure
- Mapping of micro- and mesohabitats
- Mapping of substrate quality
- Macrozoobenthos evaluation according to PERLODES
- Fish fauna according to fiBS
- Macrophytes according to PHYLIB
- short-term and long-term field studies
- Laboratory experiments / Experiments in artificial indoor streams / Mesocosm experiments
- Analysis of gastric content (microscopic and molecular biological), consumption estimation
- Molecular biological analysis of food/nutrient ressources
- development, testing and evaluation of labeling methods
- Analysis of inter- and intraspecific interactions
- Analysis of regional climate scenarios
- Scientific support for implementation measures
- Development of guidelines, recommendations for action, species conservation concepts
- Environmental education and knowledge transfer
