Natural water treatment techniques in India
Collaborative BMBF-project CCRBF
Expansion of the Indo-German Centre of Competence for Riverbank Filtration
Duration: 01.07.2020 - 31.03.2024
Project leader: Dr. H. Börnick
Project staff: H. Herrling
Funding organisation: BMBF (FKZ: 01DU20003B)
The overarching aim of the project is to strengthen educational and research cooperation between Germany and India in water research with focus on natural techniques like riverbank filtration (RBF) and managed aquifer recharge. Main objectives are the development of a science-based master plan for RBF in India until 2022, research stays and education, training and research marketing activities and the establishment and development of 5 demonstration bank filtration sites. The institute will evaluate the potential and possible limits of RBF with regard to water quality. The focus will be on the identification of anthropogenic organic trace substances under different regional conditions in India. At selected sites in India, it will be demonstrated how monitoring strategies should be designed to identify problem substances at reasonable cost and to obtain information on their removal. The knowledge and strategies gained in this process will be passed on to Indian institutions and waterworks and authorities in order to demonstrate that RBF makes a significant contribution to improving drinking water quality, also for the removal of organic trace pollutants.
