Field scholarship DHG
As part of the field campaign, soil tests were carried out and soil samples were taken.
We are very pleased that our doctoral student Lisa’s application for a DHG research grant was successful! She will now use the funds for her multiple tracer campaign in the Bavarian Forest National Park to investigate the most important areas of origin, flow paths and residence times of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) as well as the mechanisms of mobilization for flood events. The project is part of an interdisciplinary junior research group on the discharge of DOC from wooded catchment areas. Therefore, essential runoff processes on the slope as well as on various catchment scales has to be identified and analyzed.
On a newly installed permanent observation area, soil parameters are recorded in three depths and soil water samples are taken at several measuring stations. In addition, during flood events, volume-proportional sampling of precipitation, streamflow, soilwater and groundwater is carried out. The water samples are examined at the Chair of Hydrology with a Picarro for occurrence and concentration of the stable isotope ratios δ18O and δ2H. With the help of the field grant, selected samples can also be analyzed for geochemical parameters (SiO2, DOC, Fe2 +, Mn2 +, Aln +). The results can be used, for example, for material correlations and graph separations based on mixing formulas, which provides important information for process studies.
