Altostratus
Eine Wolke der Gattung "Mittelhohe Wolken" in Höhen zwischen 2.5 und 6 km. Vergleiche dazu Nimbostratus und Cirrostratus.
Es sind graue Wolkenfelder oder -schichten von streifigem, faserigem oder einförmigen Aussehen, die den Himmelganz oder teilweise bedecken und stellenweise gerade so dünn sind, dass die Sonne gerade noch schwach wie durch Mattglas zu erkennen ist. Bei As treten keine Halo-Erscheinungen auf.
Bei dieser Wolke unterscheidet man im Gegensatz zu den anderen keine Arten sondern nur Unterarten, wie Arten translucidus (As tr, "durchscheinend" und opacus (Ac op, "dicht").
Verdichtet sich die Wolke wie auf dem Bild weiter (opacus) ist die Wahrscheinlichkeit von einsetzendem längeren Niederschlag sehr hoch (Warmfrontaufzug).
