Brief Description of the Modules (Draft Version - Not Legally Binding!)
Contents and Learning Objectives
This module covers the methods and processes involved in modern drinking water treatment, the design of drinking water distribution systems, and their economical operation. Students will understand the mechanisms behind key drinking water treatment processes and will be able to calculate and design process steps. They will be able to size water distribution systems. They are familiar with the factors affecting water quality during water treatment, distribution, and storage; they can assess quality impairments and propose corrective measures.
Teaching and Learning Formats
3 SWS lecture, 1 SWS exercise, 0.5 SWS field trip (half-day field trip), and self-study.
Requirements for Awarding Credit Points
Credits are awarded upon passing the module exam. The module exam consists of a 135-minute written exam.
Credits and Grades
A total of 5 credit points can be earned. The module grade corresponds to the grade on the written exam.
Learning Objectives
Students will be able to independently carry out challenging, clearly defined tasks and place them within a broader context. In doing so, they will also acquire basic knowledge of business and institutional organization.
Contents
Students perform subject-specific engineering tasks or gain practical scientific experience either within or outside TU Dresden. To this end, they work for a period of at least 3 weeks, for example, at cooperating research institutions, government agencies, water utilities, special-purpose associations, consulting firms in Germany or abroad, or at an Institute of TU Dresden.
Teaching and Learning Formats
3-week internship, and self-study.
Requirements for Awarding Credit Points
Credits are awarded upon passing the module exam. The module exam consists of an alternative assessment in the form of a report on a 30-hour internship.
Credits and Grades
A total of 5 credit points can be earned. The module grade corresponds to the grade for the oral examination.
Contents and Learning Objectives
The module covers tasks and problems in the fields of hydro science and engineering, the fundamentals of IWRM, as well as knowledge of project management, presentation, and reporting. This includes, for example, the water management rehabilitation of an urban area, the design of a water management structure (dam, weir), or water balance calculations for a river basin. In doing so, students develop proposed solutions to complex hydroscientific problems while taking into account the interplay of diverse disciplines.
Students can define a project task, work on it, and report on the progress of the project in stages, both orally and in writing. Students acquire essential skills for independently conceptualizing, managing, and implementing projects and are able to apply engineering and scientific knowledge in practice.
Teaching and Learning Formats
1 SWS lecture, 1 SWS exercise, 4 SWS lab work, and self-study.
Requirements for Awarding Credit Points
Credit points are awarded upon passing the module exam. The module exam consists of two presentations and a 20-week project.
Credits and Grades
A total of 10 credit points can be earned. The module grade is calculated as the weighted arithmetic mean of the grades for the two presentations (25% each) and the grade for the project (50%).
A detailed description of the listed modules can be found in the module handbooks for the Department of Hydro Sciences.
