The qualification concept relies on topic-specific training, the development of professional skills, and international mentoring. These components support doctoral candidates in enhancing their abilities to reflect on goals, values, and methods in scientific work and publishing results in international forums. The primary objective of the study program is to enable doctoral candidates to deliver interdisciplinary and internationally recognized research contributions within the scope of the theme and the research training group (RTG). Additionally, they are expected to acquire qualities that distinguish them in the national and international academic and non-academic job markets.
The curriculum is tailored specifically to the research training group and provides in-depth, interdisciplinary knowledge at the interface of various engineering disciplines. Subjects covered include flight mechanics, safety research, operations research, uncertainty quantification, structural mechanics, telecommunications, computer science, photogrammetry and geodata management, meteorology, economics, and infrastructure planning.
ThKey components of the structured qualification program include lecture series by the principal investigators (PIs) of the RTG and external lecturers, occasionally involving international tutors. The program also features self-organized seminars by the doctoral candidates, as well as group-strengthening retreats to achieve the specified goals. It is complemented by elective courses offered by the Graduate Academy. In addition to their individual research projects (dissertations), the project-specific training focuses on imparting core competencies tailored to each specific sub-area (A, B, or C) throughout the maximum 48-month doctoral duration.
Qualification is continually enriched by the preceding cohort or Generation 0 through a buddy mentality, facilitated especially by planned workshops and summer schools serving as both academic and social interfaces. The staggered cohorts with a minimum one-year overlap ensure this organizationally. The model aligns with the regular academic year structure and the courses offered. The study program is supplemented by the reinforcement of professional skills through specific seminars and international mentoring by tutors. Lectures and seminars are primarily conducted at the institutes of the involved PIs, and in accordance with the overarching research idea of the RTG, they are thematically explored comprehensively.
