Important information on participation (FAQ)

With the research project "Städte in Bewegung Plus", we as a research team at TU Dresden want to find out how people get around on a daily basis. The research focuses on all forms of mobility: from car traffic, the use of public transport, cycling and walking to new, future forms of mobility.

The mobility survey embedded in the research project with the smartphone app "StiB+" will take place in September 2026 in the three cities of Berlin, Dresden and Munich. Following the survey, the data collected will be analyzed and form the basis for estimating urban mobility trends.

The data obtained from the mobility survey is extremely valuable for transportation planning. Together with you, we want to find out how we get around every day: By taking part, you can not only understand your own mobility, but also help to shape urban transport in the future so that it is even better geared to the needs of us all.

The travel survey "Städte in Bewegung Plus" is part of the "AgiMo" collaborative research group, funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG).

Anyone over the age of 16 who lives mainly in Berlin, Dresden or Munich can take part. Participation is voluntary. There will be no disadvantages if you do not take part in the survey.

To take part in the travel survey, you need a functioning smartphone with a GPS function. You can sign in to take part in the travel survey using your smartphone or PC. During the signing in process, you will receive all the important instructions on how to download the app and participate.

The "StiB+" app runs on smartphones with the Android or iOS operating system. In order for the "StiB+" app to be able to record routes, the necessary authorizations are required in the settings of your smartphone when setting up the app, such as for location services or location services. Please make sure that recording is also activated in the app before you use the app.

Please also note that battery power is required when using location services (GPS). The app is configured to save battery power, but it is recommended to charge the smartphone at night during the survey period to ensure battery performance.

The following versions are supported by the "StiB+" app:

• Android: The app supports smartphones with Android version 6.0 or higher.
• iPhone: The app supports iPhones with iOS 15 or higher.

Die Mobilitätsdaten werden mit der Smartphone-App „StiB: Städte in Bewegung Plus“ erhoben.  In anschaulichem App-Design können Teilnehmende nachverfolgen, wie sie sich inner- und außerhalb der Stadträume fortbewegen und wie viel Zeit dabei mit verschiedenen Aufenthaltszwecken verbracht wird. Lernende Algorithmen sowie Sensoren im Smartphone unterstützen die Erfassung und schlagen Verkehrsmittel und Aufenthalte vor. Darüber hinaus ist es möglich, die eigenen Wege und Aufenthalte in einer interaktiven Karte nachzuvollziehen.

In der App gibt es eine begleitende Umfrage mit Fragen zu Ihrer Person. Darüber hinaus erhalten Sie zu ausgewählten Aufenthalten "zu Hause" einen kurzen Fragebogen per Benachrichtigung in der App. An einzelnen Tagen werden zusätzliche Fragebögen per E-Mail zu diesem Thema versendet. Zum Abschluss der Erhebung gibt es einen kurzen Fragebogen zum Nutzungserlebnis.

Die Forschungsdaten nutzen wir, um städtische Mobilitätstrends sowie den Einfluss der Digitalisierung auf die Mobilität (z.B. durch Homeoffice) abschätzen zu können. Die Daten werden dabei nur in zusammengefasster Form veröffentlicht. Wir sichern zu, dass aus den Veröffentlichungen keinerlei Rückschlüsse auf Ihre Person möglich sind. Die Ergebnisse sind eine wichtige Grundlage, um die Mobilität zu sichern, den Stadtverkehr zukünftig noch anpassungsfähiger zu gestalten und auch an Ihren Bedürfnissen zu orientieren.

Ihre E-Mail-Adresse aus der Studienanmeldung und Registrierung in der App wird zum frühestmöglichen Zeitpunkt, spätestens zum Ende der Erhebungsnachbereitung gelöscht (Ende März 2027). Wurden Sie über ein postalisches Einladungsschreiben kontaktiert, gilt das auch für Ihre Personendaten aus dem Melderegister. Sämtliche personenbezogenen Forschungsdaten werden zum frühestmöglichen Zeitpunkt, spätestens zum Ende des Forschungsprojektes gelöscht (Ende 2037).

Sie können, solange in der App die Möglichkeit besteht, Ihre Daten direkt in der App ansehen, berichtigen und löschen. Alternativ können Sie sich bis Ende 2037 an den Technischen Support unter wenden, unter Angabe Ihrer  Ihres Einladungscodes. Danach werden Ihre personenbezogenen Forschungsdaten gelöscht.

Bitte beachten Sie die Ausnahmen unter dem Reiter „Werden meine Daten über das Projekt hinaus verwendet?“

Nein, meine Daten werden nicht über das Projekt hinaus verwendet.

Die Datenerhebung erfolgt personenbezogen, das bedeutet, dass aufgrund der erhobenen Daten theoretisch Rückschlüsse auf einzelne Personen gezogen werden können.

Im Rahmen der App wird unter anderem die Kartenfunktionalität von Apple verwendet, sofern Apple Produkte eingesetzt werden. Dabei werden personenbezogene Daten in die USA übermittelt. Trotz der von uns zusätzlich eingesetzten Sicherungsmaßnahmen kann hierdurch nicht komplett ausgeschlossen werden, dass die Daten im Zusammenhang mit der Nutzung der Kartenfunktionalität nicht für andere Zwecke verwendet werden können.

Wir sichern jedoch zu, dass alle Angaben streng vertraulich (zugangs- und zugriffsbeschränkt sowie passwortgeschützt) behandelt werden und die Daten unverzüglich pseudonymisiert werden:

Für die Verwendung von personenbezogenen Daten ist eine Pseudonymisierung vorgesehen in Form von alphanumerischen Kürzeln (u. a. Haushalts-ID, Personen-ID, Wege-ID – z. B. AMWG3), welche keine Zuordnung zu personenbezogenen Daten zulässt, um damit das Risiko der Bestimmung der Identität der Person so gering wie möglich zu halten. Auch für die Ausgabe der Belohnungen (https://www.wunschgutschein.de) werden die Identifikationsdaten stets getrennt verarbeitet und gespeichert.

Die Datenverarbeitung durch die App ist vertraglich an Server innerhalb des Europäischen Wirtschaftsraums (EWR) gebunden.

You can sign in to our survey on our project website https://tu-dresden.de/in-bewegung. When you sign in to the survey, you will receive all the important information on how to download the app and participate.

An account may only be registered to one person and may only be used by this person.

If several members from a household take part in the travel survey, please ensure that each person registers individually for the survey (see project website https://tu-dresden.de/in-bewegung) and that each person creates and uses their own account in the StiB app.

We would be delighted if you could use the StiB+ app to collect your trips and stays for 7 days during the survey period – or even longer if you prefer.

You can reset your password in the login screen of the app via the "Forgot your Password?" option by entering your e-mail address and then choosing a new password.

Usually, and to minimize the use of your mobile network, the app only transfers collected data via Wi-Fi. Please note that data transfer via Wi-Fican take a few hours under certain circumstances. It is therefore possible that the routes you have covered may appear in the app with a slight delay.

If you only rarely have Wi-Fi, you can also activate data transfer via mobile network in the app settings.

In the app, you can view the trips you have covered and individual trip sections ("stages") for each day. You can also see when and by which mode of transport you went where and how much time you spent on different purposes of stays. The app also provides you with many other interesting statistics relating to your travel behavior.

You can manually correct incorrectly recognized modes of transport and the purpose of stays in the app. This helps the system to improve the results. To do this, please tap on the recognized mode of transport or the suggested purpose of stay and select the correct mode of transport or the purpose of stay from a drop-down list.

You can also merge trip sections ("stages"). You can also add trips and stays in two ways:

• If there is a gap, this is displayed as "no track". If you tap on it, you can insert a new trip section or stay, enter details as well as the times.
• If there is no gap, it is also possible to delete incorrectly recognized trip sections or stays and use the resulting gap to add new elements (but without route information).

You can also comment on trip sections or the purposes of stays by tapping on the "More" option.

Please do not forget to check and confirm your travel diary.

The app automatically recognizes the modes of transport and estimates the purpose of stays. It may happen that something is not recognized correctly.

To validate the data and so that the app can be continuously improved, we ask you to check your collected data for each day, correct it if necessary and then confirm it. Thank you very much for your help.

In the app, under "Survey," there is a questionnaire that collects information about you and your household. You only need to fill this out once.

For selected stays at home, you'll receive a notification in the app asking you to fill out the time-use questionnaires. You can open these questionnaires directly from the app by tapping the entry for the stay under “Days” in the overview, and then tapping “Survey.”

The questionnaire will then open in your browser; once you’ve completed it, you can close the questionnaire.

Of course, you can end your participation in the mobility survey at any time. To do this, log out of the app in the settings and then delete the app from your smartphone.
