Project name
Determination and documentation of real emissions from vehicles and machinery
Project duration
01.11.2017 - 30.11.2021
Brief description
The aim of the project is to measure various vehicles from different manufacturers in order to collect reliable real emissions. The data collected will then be used to develop emission factors for the real driving operation of vehicles and machines.
This data forms the basis for the Handbook for Emission Factors of Road Traffic (HBEFA). As a database for air pollutants, CO2 emissions and fuel consumption for a wide range of real driving situations, these are used throughout the EU as input data for emission calculation models such as the "Computer Program to Calculate Emissions from Road Transport" (COPERT) or the "Transport Emission Model" (TREMOD).
Until now, the HBEFA was based exclusively on measurements on exhaust roller test benches and engine test benches. In addition to the New European Driving Cycle (NEDC), other driving cycles such as the ERMES - chassis dynamometer test cycle were also carried out. As a result of the further development of legal requirements for type tests, with the entry into force of the Euro 6d-Temp approval level from 01.09.2017, measurements in real road traffic (RDE - real driving emissions) with portable measuring systems (PEMS - portable emission mesurement system) are prescribed. As a result, the HBEFA will in future be increasingly based on measurements of real road journeys.
