Faster, more punctual and more environmentally friendly from east to west and on the Dresden city ring
We are proud and thankful to all project partners as we celebrate the successful completion of the QLSA (Quality-based Traffic Light Control, German: Qualitätsgerechte Lichtsignalsteuerung) project.
On behalf of Dresdner Verkehrsbetriebe AG (DVB), from 2018 to 2023, we had the opportunity to advance the digitization and interconnection of traffic signal control (TSC) through quality-based transit signal priority and, in doing so, optimize several intersections in the Dresden city area. As part of the QLSA project, the interaction between the different cross-city lines of DVB was improved, their intersections were made more efficient, and TSC-related time losses for public transit (PT) vehicles were minimized. This not only optimized traffic flow but also laid the foundation for more energy-efficient driving for PT vehicles.
Additionally, a stop position information system was implemented at multi-stop stations, including a pilot installation at the "Bahnhof Mitte" station. Furthermore, the Dresden traffic management system VAMOS – which was developed by us and provides live traffic state estimation for individual traffic – was fully integrated.
As an on-board system component for the PT vehicles, our Chair of Traffic Process Automation developed the innovative driver advisory system COSEL for buses and trams. In close cooperation with its manufacturer, Trapeze, COSEL was fully integrated into the onboard computer systems of the vehicles. COSEL supports the driving personnel by providing departure and speed recommendations for energy-efficient driving, reducing energy consumption as well as noise and pollutant emissions.
The overall system, consisting of QLSA and COSEL, enhances passenger comfort, particularly by ensuring higher schedule adherence and adaptive dwell times for more reliable dynamic inter-vehicle connections.
We proudly look back on the successful completion of this pioneering project and are pleased that the COSEL driver advisory system is now fully integrated into the entire DVB fleet. This marks a significant step towards greater efficiency, sustainability, and attractiveness in public transport!
