Measurement and evaluation of temporal effects in sustainability assessment
The aim of this research project funded by BASF SE is the further development of methods for sustainability assessment, which will, in particular, consider temporal dimensions. Monetary models and maybe further evaluation approaches will be used for this.
Although sustainability thinking in genereal already has a temporal dimension, current methods in sustainability assessment are rather static. There is not enough consideration for the changeability of environmental impacts by natural and technical processes, as well as the possible future changes in evaluation of these impacts due to new technologies or measurements.
This project will display the state of science regarding the dimension time with an intergenerational time horizon in sustainability assessment. Moreover, it will identify research gaps. With the aim of developing new methods, the project will examine, why there is currently no long-term perspective for time in sustainability assessment and by which impact factors the time horizon has an influence on sustainability assessment and decision-makers.
Furthermore, this project will evaluate, which ecological, economical and social factors are so heavily influenced by a temporal dimension, that the application of new methods with temporal consideration is justified. Based on the results, already existing methods in sustainability assessment will be further developed, taking into account the temporal dimension.
