Measuring a Company's Internal Environmental Performance (Environmental Performance Measurement)
Table of contents
The purpose of this project was the development of a systematic approach for a company’s internal environmental performance measurement (EPM). This means the creation of a control model for the measurement and evaluation of a company's environmental performance. Besides this, previous approaches for company internal and external EPM were discussed as one part of the project. In the process of developing the new EPM model, both ecological and economic aspects were considered. New approaches in the area of operational performance measurement were examined in an attempt to create a compatibility between the operational and environmental performance measurement. The aspects of the EPM model which represent the main innovations compared to previous concepts have been verified empirically. For this, a branch-oriented, written survey was conducted among German mechanical engineering companies who have been certified and validated following the EU eco-audit regulation and/or the DIN ISO 14001. The results show that the implementation of the EPM model is possible for these companies so that integrated approaches for the performance measurement of environment-oriented companies become practicable. In current projects of the Chair of Business Administration, esp. Environmental Management, the model of EPM is further developed to enable product- and process-specific differentiations.
