Daniel Vrankar gives two presentations at the AMD Creative Spark Workshop
On March 14, Daniel Vrankar presented two working papers on economic dynamics in the New Space sector at the Academy of Management "A Creative Spark" Paper Development Workshop in Berlin. The papers are dedicated to the innovation spillovers of space companies and the impact of vertical integration on the new space ecosystem.
The first paper entitled "State vs. Market-Induced Spillovers in the Space Industry", written in collaboration with Lars Hornuf, analyses the innovation spillovers of traditional space companies compared to commercialized New Space companies. The study shows that New Space companies both have higher spillover potential and realize more spillovers in than traditional aerospace companies. The results thusquestion the traditional government procurement strategy, which often favors established aerospace companies.
The second paper examines vertical integration in the New Space sector and its impact on companies and innovation dynamics. More and more start-ups are integrating vertically to cut costs and reduce dependencies on suppliers. Strategies range from in-house production of critical components to complete control of the value chain. However, this development could have negative effects on the ecosystem by increasing barriers to market entry, reducing competition and restricting innovation flows.
