New Study Explores Impact of Feedback Quality on User Engagement in Idea Crowdsourcing
The Chair of Finance and Financial Technology is pleased to share a new study co-authored by Prof. Dr. Lars Hornuf, which was recently published in the Proceedings of the ACM on Human-Computer Interaction. The paper Determining the Effect of Feedback Quality on User Engagement on Online Idea Crowdsourcing Platforms Using an AI Model examines how the nature of peer feedback influences user engagement and innovation on idea crowdsourcing platforms.
The study introduces an AI model that accurately categorizes feedback by quality (constructive versus non-constructive and toxic versus non-toxic) as well as by polarity (distinguishing positive from negative feedback). Results show that constructive, positive feedback fosters greater engagement, while toxic or negative feedback discourages participation in idea generation, idea evaluation, and idea selection, especially among less experienced users. Based on these findings, the authors suggest that crowdsourcing platforms should consider reward systems to promote constructive interactions and reduce toxic feedback, thereby creating a more supportive environment for idea generation and evaluation.
