Recap on the EUTOPIA Summer School "AI in Business and Healthcare"

On August 28, the EUTOPIA Summer School “AI in Business and Healthcare” came to an end. Approximately 60 students and faculty members from Gothenburg, Venice, and Dresden gathered for an intensive week to explore the potential of artificial intelligence in business and healthcare from various perspectives.

International cooperation of three universities
The Summer School was a joint project of the Faculty of Science and Technology and the School of Business, Economics, and Law at the University of Gothenburg, the Venice School of Management, Ca’ Foscari University of Venice, and the Faculty of Business and Economics at TU Dresden. The program was supported by the field trip partners SAP Dresden and EKFZ for Digital Health.

AI from four perspectives
The focus was on how the potential of AI can be translated into concrete added value - and what conditions are necessary for this. Participants examined AI from four perspectives: business value, responsible AI & regulation, technical feasibility, and AI adoption. Academic lectures and discussions were complemented by practical insights. Field trips to SAP Dresden and the EKFZ for Digital Health demonstrated how AI is used in businesses and the healthcare sector and what challenges arise in the process.

From theory to own AI Business Cases
Working in international teams, the students were finally able to apply what they had learned: They developed their own AI use cases, assessed their potential and feasibility, and presented their ideas in final pitches.  The AI use cases developed range from an AI assistant designed to help reduce loneliness among older people, to a forecasting AI for emergency care in hospitals, and a tool for optimizing locations for ambulance operations.

Getting to know each other at social events
In addition to the academic program, the Summer School provided a great opportunity for personal and intercultural exchange. Joint activities and social events made the week not only an academic experience but also an international one.

We would like to thank the Business Information Systems Section, and in particular Prof. Susanne Strahringer, Prof. Martin Wiener, and their teams, for the thoroughly successful organization and implementation of the Summer School.

About the EUTOPIA Network
The Summer School builds on an already established collaboration within the EUTOPIA network. In August 2025, the first joint EUTOPIA Summer School, organized by the School of Business, Economics and Law at the University of Gothenburg, the Venice School of Management at Ca’ Foscari University of Venice, and the Faculty of Business and Economics at TU Dresden, took place in Gothenburg. Entitled “Business and Sustainability: Sustainable Cities – Infrastructure Systems and Collaboration,” it focused on the challenges of sustainable cities.

This collaboration was successfully continued with this year’s Summer School in Dresden. The next joint event is already in the planning stages: Another international summer school is scheduled for 2027 and will take place in Venice. This marks the next phase of the collaboration among the three universities and once again creates opportunities for international exchange, joint projects, and engagement with current issues shaping the future.
