Structure and Course of Study
The Master's program in Business Administration contains three basic elements: the small compulsory area, the comprehensive elective area, and the concluding Master's Thesis. The total workload is 120 credit points. The standard period of study for full-time study (where 30 credit points are to be earned per semester) is 4 semesters.
The program can also be studied on a flexible part-time basis. In this case, 15 credit points must be earned per semester, and the standard period of study changes accordingly. More detailed information can be found in the regulations for part-time studies at the TU Dresden (in German only).
The following study plan for full-time study illustrates the program's clear-cut overall structure and course. The compulsory area is indicated in yellow, the elective area in gray, and the Master Thesis with the Research Seminar in blue.
Compulsory Area
The small compulsory area comprises the Research Seminar, coordinated with the Master Thesis (see below), and the module "Methodische Grundlagen" (Methodological principles).
Arching over the first two semesters, "Methodische Grundlagen" endows you with epistemological foundations and their application in business administration and economics research. Moreover, it refreshes and broadens methodological knowledge and skills in a field of your choice.
Elective Area
The elective area starts immediately in the first semester. With 80 credit points, it provides huge scope to strengthen and deepen your knowledge according to your interests. Numerous modules and specializations from the fields Business Administration, Economics, and/or Supplement are at your disposal which can be combined very freely. The only restriction is that of the 80 credit points, you have to acquire
- at least 50 credit points in the field of Business Administration.
For more information on the workings of the elective area, please use this link: Elective Area: Details
Master Thesis and Research Seminar
The Master Thesis (20 credit points) and the Research Seminar usually consume the final semester. For the Master Thesis, you will work independently on a topic in business administration using scientific methods. The duration is four months. You get the necessary analytical and methodological skills and repeated feedback from your supervisor during the Research Seminar.
You are allowed to start with the Master Thesis only if you have already acquired 75 credit points in total before. Also, you must begin no later than the semester after passing the last exam.
The Chairs of the Faculty have different regulations on topic assignment, registration and (formal) requirements for the thesis. Please inform yourself here at the Chair of your choice!
