Senior Professor Dr. Werner Esswein was chairholder of the division Business Informatics, in particular Systems Development, at the Faculty of Business and Economics at TU Dresden for 28 years, until September 2021. During this time, he founded the Research Group Digital Health, which he still supports in an advisory and research function, as a senior professor. The Research Group is currently headed by Dr. Hannes Schlieter.
In the context of his professorship, Werner Esswein particularly pursued the topic of modelling, such as reference modelling, path modelling, model-based management, and model-based evaluation in a very diverse spectrum of domains. Representative projects in these fields are, for example, mechanical engineering (Inprovy), machine tool technology (SFB-Transregio 96), the energy sector (BMBF-EsProNet) and health care (Care4Saxony, vCare). During Werner Esswein's last years in office, especially the achievements in the healthcare sector, such as accomplished through the Care4Saxony junior research group and the management of international project formats such as vCare, increased the focus on the healthcare sector and ultimately resulted in the founding of the Research Group Digital Health. During his active tenure as a professor, Werner Esswein took on longstanding responsibility for large courses in the bachelor / undergraduate area (programming and databases, introduction to business informatics) and in the master / graduate area (e.g. foundations of science theory), but also for smaller, more topic-specific courses, such as business engineering, enterprise modelling, and quality management. His great commitments in the area of self-administration included the office of the dean (1997-2000), the participation in examination boards, study commissions and faculty council, as well as the coordination of a double degree with the Università degli Studi di Trento in Italy and the exchange with Dankook University in Korea. Werner Esswein continues to support the research group in an advisory and research capacity and, furthermore, enables the team to gain further scientific qualifications.
