Strengthening Telemedicine, Improving Stroke Care: TeleStrokeRGM Launches in 2026
We are pleased to launch the TeleStrokeRGM project on 1 January 2026, contributing to an urgently needed advancement in telemedical stroke care. Stroke remains one of the greatest challenges in acute medicine—and telemedicine networks already play a key role in ensuring rapid, locally accessible, and high-quality treatment.
In Germany, around one in ten stroke patients is treated via telemedicine, for example within one of the 21 existing telestroke networks. However, the historically evolved structures, quality standards, and technical equipment of these networks differ substantially. This heterogeneity makes it difficult to ensure consistent care quality—and becomes increasingly relevant in light of demographic change and growing workforce shortages.
TeleStrokeRGM aims to develop a scientifically grounded maturity model that systematically assesses and makes visible the performance of telestroke networks, providing targeted impulses for safe, efficient, and patient-centred care. Another central component of the project is the identification of factors contributing to the success or failure of telemedical networks.
Project partners
TeleStrokeRGM is led by the University Hospital Carl Gustav Carus Dresden, Faculty of Medicine (Office for Telemedical Stroke Care in Eastern Saxony).
The Technical University of Dresden (Research Group Digital Health) is responsible for the methodological development.
The WIG2 Institute conducts the health economic evaluation.
The project is further strengthened by the involvement of numerous German telestroke networks, the German Stroke Society, and additional clinical and technical partners.
Within the Research Group Digital Health, Maren Kählig and Dr. Jeannette Stark assume operational project leadership.
