RESEARCH FOCUS
The Chair deals with three main questions of environmental management:
- Which general conditions are relevant for the private sector and public facilities? How do they interact with these conditions?
- Which instruments are important for economic-ecological optimisation in the decision-making process of companies?
- How are environmental management and sustainable development correlated?

PIK - Baubegleitung Neubau PIK (Potsdam Institut für Klimafolgenforschung)
Titel (Englisch)
PIK - Monitoring of New Construction PIK (Potsdam Institut für Klimafolgenforschung)
Kurzbeschreibung (Deutsch)
Im Wissenschaftspark „Albert Einstein“ auf dem Potsdamer Telegrafenberg entsteht von 2011-2015 ein Neubau des Potsdam-Instituts für Klimafolgenforschung e.V. (PIK).

Kurzbeschreibung (Englisch)
n the "Albert Einstein" science park on the "Potsdamer Telegrafenberg", a new building for the "Potsdam-Instituts für Klimafolgenforschung e.V. (PIK)" (Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research) was completed in 2015. It contains a large computer centre in the basement as well as office spaces and meeting spaces for 191 employees on three stories. In close proximity to the architecturally pioneering "Einsteinturm" and the "Großer Refraktor" (large refractor), this building is meant to imperceptibly integrate into the wooded area, with a timber cladded facade made from dark larch. The PIK's aim with the new building is to serve as a signal for energy efficient construction.
For this purpose, the PIK collaborated with the TU Dresden in a joint project funded by the BMWi in order to achieve a holistic energy evaluation and optimisation of the new research building. In this context, the Chair of Environmental Management and Accounting analysed the environmental impacts of the planned construction considering the entire building life cycle, using a Life Cycle Assessment according to DIN EN ISO 14040. For this purpose, the building was modelled including all the upstream chains and the later recycling of all used materials (cradle-to-grave), with the aim of identifying the most important factors for an ecological and economic optimisation.
