Mission

Nature offers an enormous arsenal of functional systems and properties that could answer a wide range of unmet technological needs. B CUBE researchers aim to capture potentially useful natural phenomena outside the range of classical systematics, to elucidate them on a multi-scale mechanistic level, and translate these findings into synthetic material using biologically inspired design concepts.

Research Groups

B CUBE research groups are thematically situated along the scientific dimensions Biomimetic Materials, BioNano Tools and BioProspecting also examining interdisciplinary issues. The center currently consists of five professorships and two BMBF-funded junior research groups.

Technology Platform

The technology platform has several core facilities that provide access to state-of-the-art research equipment and offer specialized services based on the expertise of the CMCB research groups. This service requires intensive training of staff and major investment into maintenance and replacement of equipment.

Three Research Dimensions at B CUBE

  • BioProspecting is applied to identify natural phenomena which answer unmet technological needs
  • BioNano Tools are developed and applied to characterize biological structures and processes at the molecular level, and
  • Biomimetic Materials are designed and synthesized that supersede natural biomaterials and exhibit properties exceeding current technologies.

By learning from natural phenomena and translating this knowledge into technological solutions, B CUBE is building bridges between Life Sciences and Engineering Sciences.
