Contract Research
In the Groupe 1.3.2 Contract Research of Unit 1.3. (Administration of External Funding) you receive competent guidance for the initiation and implementation of projects in the economic area of the TU Dresden (contract research and research services). Please contact us with any questions of the legal classification of your project, the contract design including the rights management, the calculation of your project and the third-party funds management. Also to conclude confidentiality statements, please contact your local representative.
In addition, subject area 1.3 supports you in general in the management of your third-party funded project. In addition to the projects of contract research and research services, this also includes grants and donations.
Contract Research
Due to obligations from EU competition law (in connection with the Framework for State Aid for Research and Development and Innovation) state aid for economic operations is prohibited. As a consequence the economic and non-economic university operations must be separated (separate accounting), see Circular Letter D1/4/2024 (in German only).
Put simply, grant-financed projects fall under the category of non-economic operations, whereas contract research is covered by economic operations. The Check Scheme for the Classification of Third-Party Financed Projects and Activities (in German only) helps you to classify your operations.
Economic operations are implemented by the Group Contract Research/ Research Services at Unit 1.3, i.e. they are run by the Directorate 1 right from the outset (not only for billing purposes!). Unit 5.1 Research Promotion is in charge of initiating the non-economic projects.
For all economic operations, full cost calculations need to be carried out, i.e. it is prohibited to finance them by state endowments for the university’s basic or other fundings. For the calculation of full costs, please use the Calculations sheet (in German only) of the TU Dresden.
Further information on the initiation and implementation of contract research and research services projects can be found in Circular Letter D1/2/19.
