Shape Next Generation Horizon Europe / FP10: Workshop Explores AI’s Impact on Materials Science
The European Commission and the OECD are inviting researchers to contribute directly to shaping the next EU Framework Programme for Research and Innovation (FP10). Their joint online workshop, “The Future of Artificial Intelligence and its Impacts on Materials Science,” will take place on 16 December 2025 and aims to gather expert insights that could influence future funding priorities.
The event will explore how rapidly evolving AI systems—such as generative models, autonomous laboratories, and data-driven design tools—could accelerate breakthroughs in materials science. The Commission has signalled that input from the workshop may help determine whether FP10 should include major, jointly funded AI-driven research missions or “moonshots” to develop advanced materials.
The one-day workshop is structured around three core aims:
- Examine how emerging AI systems might advance materials science over the next 5–10 years;
- Identify the technical progress in AI—and the supportive policy conditions—needed to unlock this medium-term potential;
- Assess how international collaboration could be most effective, including whether cost-shared AI-driven ‘moonshots’ would offer strategic value.
With global competition intensifying in both AI and advanced materials, the initiative offers scientists a timely opportunity to contribute expertise and influence long-term European research strategy. The Commission specifically encourages participation from researchers interested in upcoming materials science funding under FP10, making the workshop an important platform for shaping Europe’s next major research agenda.
Registration is open until 10 December 2025
