KDT becomes Chips: Creation of a new Joint Undertaking Chips (Semiconductor Technology) and open calls!
On 8 February 2022, the European Commission proposed a set of measures (European Chips Act) to strengthen research, development and manufacturing capacities in the European semiconductor ecosystem. This includes a "Chips for Europe" initiative, which will account for a large part of the funding (approx. 11 billion euros in public funds by 2030) allocated to the Chips Act and whose implementation will be carried out in the context of Horizon Europe as well as the Digital Europe programme.
For the implementation of related measures, a new Joint Undertaking for Chips (JU Chips) is envisaged, which will be created through a transformation of the current Joint Undertaking Key Digital Technologies (JU KDT, former ECSEL Joint Undertaking). The Commission proposal provides for a budgetary increase from currently 1.8 billion euros (JU KDT) to 4.175 billion euros for the new Joint Undertaking for Chips. Of this, at least 2.5 billion euros should be used for pilot plants, design infrastructures, competence centres and other capacity-building activities.
First calls of the KDT/ Chips Joint Undertaking were already opened:
- HORIZON-KDT-JU-2021-1 IA
- HORIZON-KDT-JU-2021-1-IA
- HORIZON-KDT-JU-2021-1-IA - Focus Topic 1: Development of open-sources RISC-V building blocks
- HORIZON-KDT-JU-2021-2 RIA
- HORIZON-KDT-JU-2021-2-RIA
- HORIZON-KDT-JU2021-2-RIA - FocusTopic 1: Processing solutions for AI at the edge addressing the design stack and middleware
- HORIZON-KDT-JU-2021-3-CSA - A Pan-European chip infrastructure for design innovation
Proposals can be submitted until April 27th, 2022.
