The European Commission has updated the 2018-2020 Horizon 2020 work programme, including to promote project proposals in the area of ​​"Societal Challenges 3 (SC3) - Secure, clean and efficient energy".

The call for proposals H2020-LC-SC3-2018-2019-2020 contains the following topics ("Topics"), some of which include several sub-topics:
- energy efficiency,
- Buildings in energy transition (B4E),
- Global leadership in renewables,
- Smart and clean energy for consumers,
- Smart citizen-centered energy system,
- Smart Cities and Communities,
- Smart airports,
- Enabling near-zero CO2 emissions from fossil fuel power plants and carbon intensive industries,
- joint actions,
- Cross-cutting issues.

All topics have a one-step application process. The submission deadlines are September 1st, 2020 and September 10th, 2020. Energy topics are also included in the Horizon 2020 calls for cross-cutting activities and in the Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) area.
