European Parliament adopts Horizon Europe Programme
On 27 April 2021, the EP gave its approval to the agreement with the Council on the legislative acts of Horizon Europe, the current EU Framework Programme for Research and Innovation (2021-2027). Horizon Europe will have an overall budget of 95.5 billion euros (in current prices) and comprises of the following parts:
- The "Excellent Science" pillar with support for frontier research projects through the European Research Council (ERC), academic fellowships and exchanges Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions, and for research infrastructures.
- The "Global Challenges and European Industrial Competitiveness" pillar which is structured along six thematic clusters to enable support for collaborative research and innovation actions,
- The "Innovative Europe" pillar aims which brings together the newly created European Innovation Council (EIC), the European Institute of Innovation and Technology (EIT), and support to improve the overall ecosystem for innovation in Europe.
- Furthermore, the programme part "Widening participation and strengthening the European Research Area" will contribute to increase research and innovation capacities of countries still lagging behind, and support (policy) measure aimed at reforming and enhancing the European Research and Innovation system.
Parts of the Work Programme covering the European Research Council ERC) and the European Innovation Council (EIC) have already been published. The remaining parts of the first Work Programme (2021/2022) of Horizon Europe still need to be finalised by the Commission in consultation with Member States. The publication of corresponding calls for proposals is expected for the end of May.
