FAIRe Forschungsdatenpublikation in den Erdsystemwissenschaften mit dem Repositorium PANGAEA – Ein Workshop (in German)
Registration see below
With open science becoming a standard practice in research, university and research libraries are increasingly tasked with providing services to support the FAIR publication of research data. Many German and European research grants require a mandatory strategy for publishing research data in their application forms. The sustainable provision of research data can be ensured by research data repositories.
This workshop provides an opportunity to learn about the functionality of the reputable, open repository PANGAEA hosted by the Alfred Wegener Institute, Helmholtz Center for Polar and Marine Research (AWI) and the Center for Marine Environmental Sciences, University of Bremen (MARUM). PANGAEA is operated as an Open Access library aimed at archiving, publishing and distributing georeferenced data from earth system research. PANGAEA is certified with the CoreTrustSeal.
While long-term accessibility is ensured by the mere use of a trustworthy repository, descriptive metadata is crucial for the findability of research data. Reusability increases with comprehensive documentation and meaningful context information for any dataset. In addition to an introduction to core RDM principles and the reasons and benefits of publishing research data, there will be interactive elements to further awareness of the importance of metadata and good documentation practices.
During a hands-on session, participants will explore PANGAEAs datasets and carry out a data aggregation task in the Data Warehouse, highlighting the benefits of PANGAEAs curated data submission procedure. Finally, they will conduct a mocked-up data submission, with the chance to ask questions and discuss their experiences.
