This is an introductory workshop to the essential concepts in quantitative research with application to the social sciences. Its target audience are doctoral students with moderate or low previous experience in quantitative methods. The course focuses on the key ideas underlying statistical and quantitative reasoning, including fundamentals of exploratory data analysis and statistical inference. Descriptive topics include methods for both discrete and continuous variables, as well as graphical methods. Statistical inference subsumes elements of survey design, sample size determination, confidence intervals and testing of hypotheses. The methods are applicable to problems of one, two or multiple samples. Moreover, basic elements of regression analysis will be presented. Doctoral Candidates are encouraged to download the software Statgraphics (30 day free trial version; www.umex.de) prior to the class, although this is not compulsory. This is a co-operation with the Dresden Leibniz Graduate School (DLGS) |
