Here you will find information on (1) emergency measures, (2) emergency numbers, (3) outpatient treatment.
Emergency Measures
In the event of an accident: Make sure the area is safe (e.g. switch of machines and electricity)
Check – Call – Compress.
Check the responsiveness and breathing of the injured or ill person.
Call out loudly for help and support from colleagues or first aid officers in your work area), then call the emergency number 112 and subsequently the TUD Security Service ext. 20000 or +49 351 463 20000.
Important information when reporting an accident:
- Where did it happen?
- What happened?
- How many people are involved?
- What kind of injury/illness are we dealing with?
- Wait for further questions – The Rescue Coordination Centre ends the call.
Compress: If the person(s) affected are unresponsive or unable to breathe, begin with CPR – cardiopulmonary resuscitation - (in the middle of the chest, at least 100x per minute) as soon as possible, and ask someone to get a basic defibrillator (at your current location). Don’t stop applying CPR until the ambulance arrives! Trained first aiders should additionally carry out mouth-to-mouth resuscitation (with a ratio of two breaths to 30 chest compressions).
Application of the basic defibrillator
After opening the cover, the device will guide you through the resuscitation steps with clear voice instructions.
Bleeding
- Cover the wound with a sterile dressing (while lying down)
- In case of heavy bleeding, apply a pressure bandage
- In case of heavy bleeding, keep the injured person warm
Burns
- For small scale burns (<10% of the body), cool with running water
- In the case of large scale burns, do not cool, leave the clothing on
- Loosely cover the burn wound with a sterile dressing
- In case of large scale burns, keep the injured person warm
Shock (restlessness, pale skin, trembling)

Outpatient Treatment (German: D-Ärzte)
For initial treatment after an accident at work, any doctor can be chosen e.g. a so-called D-Arzt (surgeon or orthopaedist approved by the Unfallkasse [German Accident Insurance] Saxony) or the nearest available doctor of a suitable specialist area (e.g. GP, eye doctor, dermatologist, ENT-specialist).
Reporting to the D-Arzt is necessary if the doctor performing the initial treatment deems the injury severe enough to excuse the injured person from work, or if the necessary medical treatment is expected to last for more than one week (according to the German Accident Insurance; DGUV, Deutsche Gesetzliche Unfallsversicherung Regulation 1 § 24 (4)).
