University and habitus: How does origin shape my academic career path?
Social background plays an important role in the German higher education system and also has an influence on the decision for or against a doctorate. Being the first in the family to go to university, to do a doctorate and to take further steps - a path with many facets, special challenges and questions. Parents are often unable to provide much support because they know little or nothing about the academic world.
Added to this are family expectations, a lack of experience and role models. Often, however, we are not even aware of these contexts and connections, but rather they are hidden and unconscious.
This workshop offers you the opportunity to
- Recognize your strengths and reflect on the connection with your background
- Compare your own habitus with the expectations at the university
- Understand the unwritten rules of the academic world
- Work on biographical patterns and discuss privileges
Use this workshop to use your resources as a first-time academic in a targeted manner for your academic career and to exchange ideas with other early-career researchers.
