The University School Dresden pilot project has been supported in the process of school development and research by a Structuring and Evaluation Commission since 2020. The commission, which comprises renowned educational scientists and experienced practitioners, has now issued its third report.

Commission praises development work – Youth School as an extracurricular place of learning

The commission is once again deeply impressed by the development work conducted at University School Dresden. In their latest report, they highlight the Youth School in the Alte Ziegelei in Dresden Prohlis. University School students in grades 6 and up can gain comprehensive skills by working in teams on a variety of non-traditional school activities (e.g., the Youth School features a workshop, gardening, cooking, and cleaning facilities). In addition to subjects such as Economy, Technology and Household/Social Affairs, the students learn how to take on responsibility and improve their self-organization skills. They are supported by a multi-professional team of teachers, students and other experts. Expanding schooling to include extracurricular stakeholders opens up new opportunities for students to gain career orientation at an earlier age.

Renewed appeal to the decision-makers

The commission stated, “it is evident that developing an alternative schooling concept requires more resources than a usual school.” Consequently, they appeal to those responsible for running and financing the University School Dresden to secure the necessary resources for the conceptual, theoretical, evaluative, and practical work for the future. In addition to equipment for both the School and the research unit "ForUs", the report focuses on the staffing situation and calls for a “generous pool of credit hours for the school that can and should also be used for leadership structures.” The report also recommends closer collaboration with TU Dresden in the areas of research and teacher training. To achieve this, the research unit "ForUs" would need to be provided with solid basic funding. The commission would like to see continuity in the developments already achieved by the school, so that the project can achieve its ambitious goals for the school of the future.

It is a free, public primary and secondary school funded by the city, where innovative teaching and learning formats are tested under academic supervision.
