Learning and play workshop for Ukrainian pupils: scientists and students offer educational support for families in Dresden who have fled the war
Scientists and students from the Humanities and Social Sciences Department at TU Dresden have developed an educational project to offer families who have fled Ukraine an educational and social meeting place in Dresden. Since 11 March 2022, a learning and play workshop has been available to Ukrainian schoolchildren and young people aged 6 to 16 on weekdays in the rooms of the TUDAG educational companies in the World Trade Center Dresden.
It offers children and young people affected by war and flight a space for exchange and learning together. Pedagogically supervised accompanying programmes are designed to help them process what they have experienced. The project is supported by TUD teaching staff from the fields of vocational education, school education and various subject didactics, as well as by the Semper Opera Education and the State Operetta. In addition, therapists and a Ukrainian teacher were recruited.
The initiator of the project is Anke Langner, Professor of Educational Science with a focus on inclusive education at the TU Dresden. Inspired by a newspaper interview with a Ukrainian teacher who had fled and many enquiries to the university school, the idea for targeted, unbureaucratic support for refugee families with children and young people was born. Based on the consideration that the classic school cannot provide the optimal conditions in this special situation, an offer for the adolescents torn from their familiar lives in their unfamiliar new living situation is necessary that provides the right pedagogical attention, says Langner. "We are not interested in replacing classical school lessons, but we want to offer the children and young people a daily structure again and a place to meet other people of the same age. There is no curriculum here, but we look at what the children enjoy".
The play and learning workshop is organised in cooperation with the educational companies of the TUDAG Group - DIU, EIPOS and TUDIAS - which provide premises and teaching materials free of charge. Prof. Hans Müller-Steinhagen, Chairman of TUDAG and President of DIU, emphasises "that these companies are happy to contribute with their resources to alleviate the suffering of adolescents who have been particularly hard hit by the invasion of their home country and the flight".
The learning and play workshop for children and young people aged 6 to 16 is located in the premises of TUDAG-Bildungsunternehmen in the World Trade Center Dresden, Ammonstr. 72, 01067 Dresden. It is open Mondays to Fridays from 10 am to 12 pm. Interested families and students who would like to support the project educationally should register via .
