On the transformation of the professional habitus of nursing teachers

The HabTrans research project is a joint project of the TUD Dresden University of Technology (project leader: Prof. Dr. Anja Walter) and the Brandenburg University of Technology Cottbus-Senftenberg (project leader: Prof. Dr. Heidrun Herzberg). With the project, which is funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG), the research team aims to make a significant contribution to the professionalization of teachers in the occupational fields of health and nursing.
The Nursing Professions Act, which came into force on January 1, 2020, poses enormous challenges for teachers at nursing schools in designing the new nursing training. There is potential for professionalization in coping with the requirements, which is the subject of the research here under the focus of habitus transformation. The research objective is realized as an empirical study within a qualitative research design in the federal states of Thuringia and Lower Saxony.
Since the implementation of generalist nursing training in January 2020, nursing schools have faced enormous challenges. The design of the new training profile not only requires a curricular and organizational reorientation of the educational institutions, but also opens up personal development needs for educators. In a broader sense, the changed framework conditions can also be understood as an impulse that can change existing attitudes, patterns of thought and perception, but also professional knowledge, such as didactic strategies of teachers. In the research project, this phenomenon is referred to as habitus transformation. This process is already taking place from "caring" to "teaching", i.e. it begins with one's own nursing training and practice and extends to all phases of teacher training.
The research project aims to investigate the influence of the current legal framework conditions and requirements in generalist nursing training on teacher professionalization. This is to be done in particular under the aspect of habitus transformation among teachers in the professional field of nursing. This also includes gaining insights into the implicit knowledge of teachers. Not only the perspective of the individual plays a role here, but also that of the pedagogical collective, since the development of a professional habitus cannot be thought of independently of social construction processes. Based on the insights gained, implications for the training and further education of teachers are to be identified and quality development at nursing schools is to be supported. This also includes the further development of didactic standards, innovations in curriculum development and, in a broader sense, the assurance of quality in generalist nursing training.
The research project is realized as an empirical study within a qualitative research design within the framework of grounded theory methodology. In order to be able to examine the object of research from different perspectives, a method triangulation of expert interviews, group discussions and participant observations is followed with regard to data collection.
