5th state competition WTH 2019
This year, the state competition for Business, Technology, Household and Social Affairs (WTH) took place for the fifth time at the TUD Dresden University of Technology. On 11.04.2019, 13 pupils and one female pupil from the 8th to 9th grades competed against each other. These students came first in the regional competitions in the Saxon Switzerland/Eastern Ore Mountains, Bautzen, Chemnitz, Leipzig, Zwickau and Dresden regions.
This year's task was to produce an upholstered stool. This was also to be equipped with a removable bag, lighting and a partition. The participants were provided with a kit for the stool, which had to be assembled. (Technology) The participants had to cut and sew the bag for the stool themselves. (Household) Covering the seat was a new challenge for all participants. This new experience in particular seemed to be a lot of fun for everyone involved. They also gained a small insight into the upholsterer's profession. To ensure that the electronics were not neglected, another part of the task was to illuminate the inner workings of the stool. The students also had to demonstrate their skills with a soldering iron. (Technology) At the end of the four hours of work, the participants presented their project in a five-minute presentation to a panel of experts. This jury was made up of representatives of the competition organizer LJBW e. V., the Chamber of Industry and Commerce (IHK), the Chamber of Crafts (HWK), the regional competition managers, WTH/S teachers and technical advisors as well as WTH/S teaching students from the TUD Dresden University of Technology.
We were able to welcome the Minister of Education, Mr. Christian Piwarz, to the award ceremony. This year, the top three winners received an invitation to a one-week international student competition camp in the Czech Republic in addition to a non-cash prize. Of course, no participant went away empty-handed. All received a small gift sponsored by the Saxony Chamber of Crafts and the Saxony Chamber of Industry and Commerce.
The first place winner this year came from Leipzig. Leon Knospe from the 56th secondary school impressed everyone with a very good performance. Second place went to the only participant, Livia Richter from Melanchthon Secondary School in Görlitz. Third place went to Moritz Wermig from the Pausa secondary school.
This year's state competition was once again supported by the Saxon State Ministry of Culture in the form of funding for prizes 1 to 3, consumables and catering for the pupils.
A big thank you to all the head teachers and subject teachers at the participating schools who made it possible for their pupils to take part in the state competition!
Special thanks also go to the WTH/S teacher training students at TU Dresden, who were responsible for the tasks, preparations, catering for the participants and the implementation.
