Building blocks for the school of the future - launch of the #PixelSpenden campaign
Together with its supporters, Dresden University School has already achieved many milestones. The next one is particularly powerful: a learning building for the university school. The school community and the Universitätsschule Dresden e.V. are launching the online campaign #PixelSpenden for the urgently needed new building.
The University School Dresden was launched in 2019 with the aim of formulating fundamental findings on the conditions for successful learning in the research project as a scientifically supported school trial over 15 years. Already, 360 children from all over Dresden are learning using innovative learning methods that focus on both cooperation and individual learning progress. In the real-world laboratory, they are testing digitally supported learning with the learning guides today so that many generations of pupils can benefit from the scientific findings in the future. Future and current teachers will also be able to use these at TU Dresden's training and further education school. In addition, the findings from the school trial will be made available to decision-makers in the field of school development and planning.
There are currently 360 pupils in grades 1 to 6 at the three-form entry school. The student body grows by at least one grade level each year up to grade 10. The prefabricated building from the 1980s in the Plauen district will soon be too small as a result. This was already known before the school was founded and a new building was planned on the school grounds on Cämmerswalder Straße. A preliminary design for a learning house, in which the school community and researchers can continue to explore and experience the school of the future - with digitally supported learning related to life and work - is already available. However, the necessary funds for the new building are not fully available in the municipal budget.
Learning spaces for individual learning
Architecture and design options in learning spaces are important framework conditions for the implementation of innovative learning and teaching methods. The school community and the Universitätsschule Dresden e.V. are launching a fundraising campaign to enable contemporary learning in a modern school building in the scientifically supported school trial. With the help of numerous supporters, the funding gap in the online campaign #PixelSpenden is to be closed.
The new building in Dresden Plauen would enable the school to grow up on site - and save the students from having to move to another location. This is particularly important for the research project, explains Professor Anke Langner, Head of Accompanying Research at TU Dresden: "Moving is a challenge for any school and this decision must be carefully considered, especially for a growing school experiment. In the school trial, we want to observe which conditions support successful individual learning processes - and not what influence a move has on learning. It is also particularly important to have a consistent student body. If a change of location is not acceptable to the parents, valuable data will be lost in the long-term research project."
The fundraising campaign is supported by the Advisory Board of the Eltern-Förderverein Universitätsschule Dresden (FVUS).
Board of Trustees member Dr. Eva-Maria Stange, former Minister of State, is the patron and emphasizes the importance of the school experiment for the development of a school of the future for all: "Learning processes are largely dependent on the teachers, the learning environment and the learners themselves. The Dresden University School - a unique school trial in Germany - therefore requires an innovative, inclusive and future-oriented learning environment. Pupils should grow up in an environment that is stimulating and promotes learning. This includes a learning and teaching infrastructure that does justice to the digital age. Equally important is the outer shell - the room, the building - which is emotionally and aesthetically stimulating and which meets the diverse needs of the teaching-learning process as well as the individuality of the pupils. In this way, student teachers can take inspiration for their future school practice and research into the successful design of inclusive education can also include the learning environment. To make this possible at the Dresden University School in a contemporary learning building, I am supporting the online campaign #PixelSpenden with my patronage."
On the website www.bausteine.universitaetsschule.org, donors young and old can gradually uncover the million-pixel image "View into the school of the future" from February 16. The motif was selected from the entries to the "Blick in die Schule der Zukunft" art competition by a jury of pupils, parents, learning guides and public relations professionals.
The donors can leave a message and, for example, a link to their company or association above the pixels revealed. In this way, they show their support for the "Dresden University School - School of the Future" project in a publicity-effective way.
The million-pixel image will remain available on the University School Dresden website even after the end of the #PixelDonations online campaign.
