Draw a sketch. (No) help with mathematical modeling in geometry?

Junior Professor Johanna Schönherr from the University of Paderborn is our guest at the mathematics didactics colloquium. All interested students, lecturers and teachers are cordially invited. The event is offered hybrid.

What is the lecture about?

Mathematical modeling is challenging for many learners, whereby the construction of a suitable problem representation is a central hurdle. Drawing a sketch is therefore a potentially helpful strategy, especially in geometry. Empirically, however, the effectiveness of drawing a sketch is rarely demonstrated.

The presentation will synthesize the results of various studies in order to investigate the conditions under which drawing a sketch supports learners in solving modelling tasks. Learning prerequisites (e.g. strategic knowledge of sketches), mediating variables (e.g. sketch quality) and teaching measures (e.g. scaffolding) will be examined. Finally, conclusions for further research and teaching practice are discussed.
