What is the lecture about?
The ability of mathematical modeling is considered a central part of mathematical education. Nevertheless, there is no common understanding of what exactly is meant by modeling, what goals should be pursued in the classroom and what characteristics modeling tasks should have.
The first part of the presentation provides an overview of international perspectives on modeling. The results of a systematic literature review will be presented, in which the aims, task characteristics and perspectives of current research will be analyzed. The second part focuses on making assumptions in modeling. A research project is used to show how teaching with open modeling tasks can affect cognitive and motivational variables.
