What is the lecture about?
The development of spatial imagination and visual perception in children of pre-school and primary school age is an essential goal of geometric activities in elementary and primary education. The presentation will discuss the relevance of these spatial-visual skills for mathematics teaching, in particular for the acquisition of arithmetic skills.
In addition, results from our own studies on individual strategies of children of pre-school and primary school age for laying and building tasks with plane figures and spatial objects from elementary school geometry lessons will be presented. The focus will also be on the question of what possibilities are available in the practice of initial teaching to combine geometric activities with tasks for determining numbers and decomposing.
