What is the lecture about?
The development of a sound understanding of the place value system is an essential learning content of primary school mathematics. Understanding place value is a reliable predictor of later arithmetic performance in secondary school and an important basis for later content. At the same time, it presents many learners with major challenges and is rightly regarded as a central feature of numeracy difficulties.
The presentation will introduce a hierarchical developmental model for place value understanding and its validation. In addition to implications for (school) practice, two empirical studies will be presented that examine the relationships between place value understanding and writing multi-digit numbers on the one hand and number line estimation on the other. Finally, the results are discussed and research perspectives are outlined.
